Aims of the SymposiumWe, the EMBL PhD students are organizing
a three-day interdisciplinary symposium to explore many exciting topics in
the field of biological recognition. The programme will highlight
the latest research on different levels of recognition in biology, from the
molecular and inter-cellular interactions, to the response of the immune system
and the behavioural implications of recognition. Lectures will include both
extended introductions and detailed discussions of each topic, making the
symposium accessible to students and young scientists from all fields of
the life sciences.
The symposium
will last for 2 and a half days. The one-hour slots assigned to each speaker
include 20 minutes for discussion and comments from
the audience. Each lecture will begin with a substantial introduction
into the field of research, followed by the specific biological questions.
This will allow non-specialists in the presented topic to benefit the
most from the lectures. A selected panel discussion will help to extend and
deepen interactions
and communication. Furthermore, all participants may (but do not have to!)
contribute to the symposium by presenting a poster about their specific
topic of research. This is NOT restricted to the field of recognition.
The 3 best poster presentations will be awarded a prize.
This symposium is the
fourth to be organised by EMBL PhD students. The previous
symposia, from the
years 2000 to 2002, were "From
Genes to Thoughts", "Evolution"
and "Life within Boundaries".
